Bedfordshire Police History

The history of Bedfordshire Police started in 1839 when a police force was established under the County Police Act 1839.

Prior to Bedfordshire Police’s institution, there were separate parish constables responsible for different areas. The hierarchy of Bedfordshire Police looked something like this:

  • Based in Ampthill (Civil Parish), Bedfordshire
  • Six (6) Superintendents
  • Forty (40) Constables, each paid 19 shillings a week

Interestingly, the Bedfordshire Police that we see today was actually formed in 1966.

Luton Borough Police and Bedfordshire Constabulary

According to online sources, Luton Borough Police came out as yet another independent police force from Luton, Bedfordshire in 1876 with similar responsibility as Bedfordshire Police. It stayed self-governing until merged with Bedfordshire Constabulary in 1947 and became Bedfordshire and Luton Constabulary.

Bedfordshire Constabulary was formed in 1965 as a preceding agency of the police force. The Bedfordshire and Luton Constabulary served well until 1974 it was disbanded to possibly become part of the Bedfordshire Police.
